Morocco Travel Tips

Passport/Visa:

Your passport must have at least six months of validity from your return date when traveling abroad.

Participants with valid U.S. or Canadian passport do not require a visa. If you hold a passport of a foreign country, please contact the Moroccan Embassy in your area for further information on visa requirements.

All visitors to Morocco require a valid passport. United States citizens do not need to obtain visas to enter Morocco. If you are not a U.S. citizen, contact the Moroccan Embassy to inquire whether a visa is necessary. Double check that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your scheduled return date. Make a photocopy of your passport and carry it separately from your passport.

Currency and Money Exchange:

The local currency is the Moroccan Dirham (MAD). Exchange your money at banks, bureau de change or at the exchange counter at your hotel. Some counters require to see your passport for the transaction. Banking establishments in large Moroccan cities are often equipped with ATMs.

Climate:

In Marrakesh the average temperature for November to January hovers at around 53.6ºF/ 12ºC, while June to August temperatures average around 77 F/ 25 C. Winters can also be quite wet, while the summer heat is dry rather than humid. In Rabat located towards the northern end of Morocco’ Atlantic Coastline the summers are warm, sunny and dry while the winters can be wet and cool with average temperatures of around 57.2 F/ 14 C. In Fez located towards north of the country in the Middle Atlas the winters are rarely freezing with average temperatures of around 57.2 F/ 14.0 C. From June to August, the weather is typically hot, dry and sunny. Summer temperatures average around 86 F/ 30.0 C.

What to Pack:

During the summer months, pack lightweight cotton clothing and a sweater for cool evenings. During the winter months, wear layers that can be taken off during the heat of the day and put back on for cool evenings. Wear comfortable shoes as you will be doing a lot of walking. At all times, modesty in clothing should be observed. A good rule is to cover your back and shoulders outside of the hotel area. Women should cover their arms when visiting mosques. Bring comfortable shoes for sightseeing.

Health Precautions:

Drink only bottled water with no ice. Eat in the hotel restaurants or in well-known leading restaurants recommended to you by hotel concierge or Homeric representatives.

Electricity:

The current is 220 volts in most areas. Wall plugs are the round, two pronged European type.

Tipping:

Service charges are included, but it is customary to show appreciation to hotel personnel and to your guide and driver.
